Hunger Action Month in Lyon County
Throughout the month of September, Lyon County has been actively working to address the root causes of food insecurity within the county as a part of Hunger Action Month.
On September 18th, Lyon County Food and Farm Council Members as well as Healthier Lyon County members attended the Kansas Food Action Network's Southeast Kansas Food Action Convening. The event offered valuable insight into the rural food system, including historical context and current challenges facing communities in the region.
Later in the month, Healthier Lyon County hosted a Tenant Rights and SNAP Assistance Workshop. With over 20 community organizations present, participants learned the basics of tenant rights and responsibilities as well as how to help clients fill out a Supplemental Food Assistance Program application.
We are so thankful to have partnered with Housing and Credit Counseling Inc., and the Kansas Department for Children and Families in hosting this event. As participants walked away, they left with new skills and information to help those they serve at risk of eviction and food insecurity.
Lyon County is committed to creating a food-secure and healthy community, one action at a time!
