#SNAPMatters Rally in DC
On May 6, 2025, I joined hundreds of passionate advocates at Upper Senate Park in Washington, D.C., for the Food Research & Action Center’s (FRAC) SNAP Matters rally. This event was a powerful display of unity and determination, as we gathered to urge Congress to protect the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from proposed budget cuts.
A Morning of Advocacy
The rally commenced at 8:30 a.m., with attendees holding signs and chanting slogans that emphasized the importance of SNAP in combating hunger and poverty. Speakers included Rep. Alma Adams (D-NC) and others, who passionately advocated for the preservation of SNAP benefits. Their words resonated deeply, highlighting the critical role SNAP plays in supporting millions of Americans.
The Importance of SNAP
SNAP is the nation's most effective anti-hunger program, providing essential food assistance to over 40 million individuals. The proposed cuts, amounting to $230 billion over the next decade, threaten to undermine this vital resource. As a participant in the rally, I was reminded of the real-life impact these benefits have on families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
Advocacy in Action
Following the rally, many attendees, including myself, participated in Lobby Day activities, meeting with congressional representatives to discuss the importance of safeguarding SNAP. These face-to-face interactions were invaluable in conveying our message and urging lawmakers to reject harmful budget proposals.
A Call to Action
The SNAP Matters rally was a testament to the power of collective action. It reinforced the message that SNAP matters—not just as a program, but as a lifeline for millions. As I left the Capitol grounds, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to continue advocating for policies that support vulnerable populations. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
