A City Slicker’s Introduction to Kansas Agriculture by Rep Brooklynne Mosley
Like many people, I have not spent much time in rural communities. Outside of occasional visits to family in Sedalia and Windsor, I’m what one would call a city slicker. I was sworn into the Kansas Legislature in 2025. My first year, I was lucky to sit on Agriculture and Natural Resources for my afternoon committee. It soon became my favorite committee. I love learning and it was a committee that I had to study a lot for. One of the representatives who I looked up to in the Ag Committee was Rep Lisa Moser. She is so intelligent and understands the issues. If I leave the legislature knowing a third of what she knows I’d be lucky. She’s also won the legislative showmanship twice.
Before Lisa was Lisa, I imagine she was much like the two wonderful young ladies who helped me learn how to show cattle for the Legislative Showmanship exhibition. Makenzie, who is in the 8th grade and has already earned her own awards in showing livestock, and Genayla, a recent Riley County High graduate and first year college showed me the ropes. They were both extremely knowledgeable and told about the breed of cattle each of them raised on their ranch. The cow I showed was a pregnant short horned plus raised by Genayla. Makenzie raises Angus and is already driving heavy farm equipment.
There is lot happening in the cattle industry that are impacting their ability to thrive. Regardless of whatever path the young women choose, continuing to feed Americans should always be an option. Thank you to the Kansas State Fair, more specifically The Grand Drive, FFA and 4-H for giving me an opportunity to listen and learn. Lastly thank you to women like Representative Lisa Moser helped me understand how interesting Agriculture is.
To The Stars,
Representative Brooklynne Mosley, District 46 | Lawrence
