Kansas Appleseed and Kansas Food Action Network Announce New Incubation Partnership
Lawrence, Kansas — April 29th, 2025 - Kansas Appleseed, a statewide advocacy organization committed to advancing justice and equity in Kansas, and the Kansas Food Action Network (KFAN), an organization committed to promoting community-driven food system change, are thrilled to announce a new evolution in their ongoing partnership.
The Kansas Food Action Network faced closure in January 2025 when KC Healthy Kids, KFAN's fiscal agent of 5 years, announced it was dissolving. Kansas Appleseed stepped in to offer KFAN the opportunity to temporarily incubate under their organization. The merger strengthens the organizations' shared mission to advocate for policy changes that promote food access and economic opportunity for all Kansans.
Under this arrangement, Kansas Appleseed will serve as the fiscal sponsor for the Kansas Food Action Network, providing crucial infrastructure that allows KFAN to maintain operations and continue its important work without interruption as they seek their own nonprofit status from the IRS.
“Our team is thrilled to elevate our existing partnership with Kansas Appleseed, a long-standing and successful nonprofit whose values and commitment to food justice align closely with our own,” said Miranda Miller-Klugesherz, Senior Director of the Kansas Food Action Network. “The provides us with the foundation we need to scale our efforts and create more sustainable, equitable food systems that will benefit the entire community.”
The merger strengthens the organizations' shared mission to advocate for policy changes that promote food access and economic opportunity for all Kansans. By housing the Kansas Food Action Network, Kansas Appleseed has extended crucial infrastructure that allows KFAN to maintain operations and continue its important work without interruption as they seek their own nonprofit status from the IRS.
We are excited to welcome the Kansas Food Action Network to the Kansas Appleseed team. We have long admired KFAN's community-centered approach to reducing hunger and we are looking forward to supporting those efforts while also giving them a home as they work towards launching their own non-profit organization. -Jami Reever
